What sizes are available for vibratory plates?
Vibratory plates, also known as vibrating plates, come in various sizes and weight classes. The choice depends primarily on the application, the area to be worked on, and the desired compaction result.
1. Lightweight or forward-moving vibratory plates (approx. 100-200 kg)
- Applications: Ideal for smaller jobs such as sidewalks, driveways, pavers, or narrow areas like cable trenches.
- Advantages: Easy to handle, compact method of construction, easy to maneuver in corners or around curbs.
- Operating width: Usually narrow, about 30–40 cm.
These models are perfect if, for example, you want to lay interlocking pavers or perform compaction on sand surfaces.
2. Medium-sized Vibratory plates (approx. 200–600 kg)
- Applications: For larger paved areas, driveway entrances, asphalt work, or landscaping.
- Performance: Centrifugal forces of up to 70 kN ensure powerful compaction.
- Operating width: Often 50–70 cm, expandable with extension plates.
These plates offer a good balance between Maneuverability and Compaction performance.
3. Heavy vibratory plates (over 600 kg, up to approx. 1,200 kg)
- Applications: For large-scale construction projects such as road construction, railway embankments, or large areas.
- Performance: Extreme compaction force of up to 130 kN.
- Special feature: Often equipped with Remote control or Electric starter for professional application.
This equipment is usually too large for DIYers, but indispensable on construction sites.
Size recommendations based on pavement thickness
- Up to 6 cm paving thickness: Vibratory plates with a max. weight of 130 kg and approx. 18 kN of compaction force.
- 8–10 cm paving thickness: 170–200 kg and at least 20 kN.
- For paving thicknesses of 10 cm and above: 200–600 kg and up to 70 kN to achieve optimal results.
